Anne Arundel County’s Turnaround Thursday Movement is celebrating its first anniversary! Turnaround Thursday launched (publically) on March 2, 2023. This “second chance job movement” is empowering those recently released from incarceration, the underemployed, and unemployed with the skills needed to secure and maintain employment leading to lifelong careers. Though this movement is just approaching its first anniversary, the stories of success are inspirational. The stories of Ms. Jones and DJ are two of many.
Ms. Jones was released from the Ordnance Road Detention Facility in August 2023. While being incarcerated she embraced the opportunity for a new beginning by attending trainings offered through Turnaround Thursday. Through case management and job development training she was working for Burger King immediately after being released. While working for Burger King, Ms. Jones proved to be a great worker by giving her best to her employer. However, her time with Burger King was brief, by November, Ms. Jones was working within the Luminis Health System. She is now sustaining a home for her and her daughter while proudly working full-time. Anne Arundel County Executive Steuart Pittman, honored Ms. Jones with a citation recognizing her many accomplishments.
DJ, another participant from the Ordinance Road facility is working for the Luminis Health System as of November 2023. DJ is living in her own apartment, she’s working, and she’s taking classes in Nursing.
Due to the resources the Turnaround Thursday Movement is providing, 28 people are working for one of Turnaround’s nine participating employers. This movement is empowering people like Ms. Jones and DJ to live amazing lives while serving as vital members of our beloved community.
